2. My teaching styles: What is Vinyasa and Hatha Yoga?
Vinyasa Yoga is a dynamic and fluid style of yoga that emphasises the seamless transition between postures, synchronised with the breath. The term "Vinyasa" can be translated from Sanskrit as "to place in a special way," reflecting the deliberate series of movements aligned with inhalations and exhalations. This style encourages a continuous flow of poses, promoting cardiovascular health, strength, flexibility, and mindfulness. Unlike static yoga practices, Vinyasa is often characterised by its varied sequences and creative transitions, making each session unique. It is well-suited to practitioners looking for a physically engaging and rhythmically paced yoga experience.
Hatha yoga is a traditional style of yoga that focuses on physical postures (asanas), breath control (pranayama), and meditation. The term "hatha" derives from the Sanskrit words "ha," meaning sun, and "tha," meaning moon, representing the balance of opposing forces within the body and mind. It aims to harmonise the body and mind, preparing practitioners for deeper spiritual practices.
Hatha yoga classes commonly involve slow, deliberate movements and postures designed to increase strength, flexibility, and balance. Breath awareness and control are emphasised to enhance concentration and relaxation. Unlike more vigorous styles of yoga, Hatha tends to be gentler and is often recommended for beginners or those seeking a mindful, steady practice.
